Advent, properly understood is the season beginning four Sundays before Christmas and lasts until Christmas eve. It is a time of anticipation of the coming Messiah, just as the children of Israel waited and longed for the coming of the promised Messiah. The hymns of the Advent season reflect this longing. In these hymns we remember that longing, and at the same time look forward to a future, second coming.
